Thank you, all of you who left comments—there are some terrific comments on this site, and I wish I had time to answer each and every one personally. I hope to have more time to give to the site, now that my semester’s over, truly a term from hell.

  1. Listened to your interview with Dr. Dan Gottlieb today on WHYY in Philadelphia. I already read your book and it is the first one that has described the kind of mind-numbing chronic insomnia I live with. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is robbing me of my life. I’m trying some homeopathic remedies right now. Alternating GABA and melatonin with a product containing lemon balm, skullcap and passionflower. Sometimes they help and sometimes not. I’d be glad to know of others experience with homeopathic products.

  2. Just bought Insomniac – about 65 pages in. I had mentioned in comments a few months ago that I have been free of sleep meds for five years… well I never made six years. Had to go back on Imovane (similar – but not identical to – Sonata) My sleep just got too messed up and it was causing me problems at work. (Problems as in, “Show up on time tomorrow or you’re fired”.)

    The book is everything I hoped it would be. Finally, someone is advocating for us. Thank you Gayle. You speak for so many of us, and have allowed so many others to speak through the words of your book. You may – just may – have created the tipping point, that will eventually lead to insomnia being accepted as a primary disorder of its own, and not just an annoying secondary symptom of some half-baked psychological problem.

  3. CORRECTION to my earlier comment: Imovane is similar to Lunesta, not Sonata as I had initially said. Imovane is not available in the US, but Lunesta is. In Canada it’s the opposite.

  4. Gayle, thank you so much for your book, support and many hours of research you have spent for the people like myself who have suffered from years of insomnia. I too have tried everything under the sun, but the information you have shared is by far the most helpful. I am 53 and have had insomnia off and on since I was 26. The worst and longest bout has been in the last 4 years. It takes me no less the 3 hours each and every night to fall asleep. Usually I fall asleep around 1:00 or 2:00 and stay asleep until 5 or 7 in the morning. I do think hormones are a major factor and am seeing a ND who has prescribed some bio identical HRT. which my be helping some.

    Please keep your site open, it is so helpful and I thrive on any new research out there.

    I bought your it was first published. I keep reading my favorite chapters over and over again. I thought I was reading about me for the most part. I would love to help with anything that is needed.
    I have been taking Lunesta since Dec 2006. I now wake up on 4 to 5 hours of sleep. One night I slept only ONE hour. That was frightening. I am going to my doc–pcp tomorrow and I’m giving him your book. I hope he has time to read it.
    I have many health issues and he seems to focus only on those. I typed a letter that my number one concern is not being able to sleep.
    I have an interesting story if you need one for another book!!

  6. OMG, Gayle, I thought you were talking about me in your book! My problem is falling asleep though, I can fortunately go back to sleep if I wake up. Like Cathy, it takes me 3 hours to fall asleep every night. I am starting to believe it is psychological.

    (I’m having a problem making new paragraphs on this site. Is it me?).

    I fortunately don’t feel too tired during the day, I can sleep in a bit most mornings.

    I have parathyroid disease, which is manifested in bloodwork by too much calcium and a higher parathyroid hormone level. I was considering having the now minor surgery, since I have read articles that state that this surgery has helped with insomnia and anxiety.

    Is anyone familiar with this?

  7. Aha, the paragraphs fix themselves when published. I also forgot to mention that i have had insomnia for what feels like forever to me, many, many years. My brother is a night owl, doesn’t sleep in during the week due to work, but sleeps in on weekends. My 6 year old granddaughter does not fall asleep until at least 11pm. So maybe it is a combination of genes, anxiety, my clock, etc.

    Any comments?
